The route begins in Innertkirchen, where the Gadmer Valley and Haslital intersect. The first phase covers an elevation of 600 meters up to Gadmen, the ascent meanders along a more or less straight line through the Gamer Valley. At the outskirts of Gadmen, the road winds its way up the mountain in long sweeping curves – the next 600 meters of elevation are climbed to the Himmelrank at 1800 meters above sea level.

The spectacular mountain pass of almost 46 kilometers of road length offers endless photo opportunities of which 26 are bridges and tunnels hewn into the rock massif. Travelling on the pass from east to west it starts with a stunning tunnel-bridge-tunnel combination and just gets better and better behind every curve.

Several interesting hikes await you along the route. A visit to the Trift Bridge, one of the most spectacular pedestrian suspension bridges in the Alps, is one possibility. At 100 meters high and 170 meters long, it seems to float above the area dominated by the Trift Glacier. Even the journey there, by gondola through the gorge, is an adventure.

The road reaches a peak of 2260 meters above sea level and serves mainly tourism. The views from the pass are simply breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see for miles in all directions, taking in the snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and glacial lakes.

Towards the end of the Susten Pass, you can visit the Aare Gorge. There is a 1400-meter river eroded pathway with incredible rock formations. Especially during hot summers, the up to 200-meter-deep gorge is a nice way to cool down.

So, whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or a nature enthusiast seeking a scenic escape, the Susten Pass promises an unforgettable experience. Get ready for breathtaking views, winding roads, and a touch of Swiss charm on this iconic mountain pass.
