Singapore is taking a big leap in combating climate change by building the world’s largest facility dedicated to enhancing the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This ambitious project is a collaboration between PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, and Equatic, a company specializing in carbon removal technologies.
The facility will leverage a recently developed method called the Equatic Process, which was hailed as a major invention in 2023. This process utilizes electrolysis to transform dissolved CO2 in seawater into stable solid compounds. With an estimated price tag of $20 million USD, the facility is expected to be operational by 2025 and remove an impressive 3,650 metric tons of CO2 from the ocean annually.
The significance of this project lies in its large-scale application of a relatively new technology. If successful, this facility could pave the way for widespread adoption of ocean-based CO2 removal strategies, becoming a game-changer in the global fight against climate change.
