Aogashima is a volcanic island to the south of Japan in northernmost Micronesia. It is the southernmost and most isolated inhabited island of the Izus, which are politically and administratively part of Japan but geographically not part of the Japanese archipelago. The inhabitants of this island are considered the bravest because they are living at the mouth of an active volcano.

Aogashima is a volcanic island rising from the seabed. It is thought that the island was formed from volcanic ruins piled on top of each other. It is this that gives the island a very special topography with steep cliffs of volcanic sediment.

What makes this island special is that it is a “volcano in a volcano” island. There is a small crater nestled in the center of the island – which is a larger crater. It is this unique shape that makes this place look like a scene from the movie Jurassic Park. Not only that, Aogashima Island was also inspired to create the town of Itomori in the famous anime Kimi no Nawa.

With a special terrain surrounded by steep cliffs, the island of Aogashima is almost completely isolated from the world. If you want to visit this place, you must travel by helicopter, departing from the neighboring island of Hachijojima, up to 60km away. Before the helicopter service was launched in 1993, transportation of passengers, essential goods, and food was only possible by boat, and it was difficult to predict when ships would arrive.

The life of the people on the island is highly dependent on geothermal resources from active volcanoes. They take advantage of this heat source for cooking and heating. In the center of the island, there is a sauna to serve residents and visitors.
