Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited, abbreviated as CATL, is a Chinese battery manufacturer and technology company founded in 2011 that specializes in the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, as well as battery management systems (BMS).

With a market share of 32.6% in 2021, CATL is the biggest lithium-ion battery manufacturer for EVs in the world, producing 96.7 GWh of the global 296.8 GWh, up 167.5% year on year.

It is headquartered in Ningde, Fujian Province, and operates manufacturing bases in Ningde, Fujian province; Xining, Qinghai province; Liyang, Jiangsu province; Yibin, Sichuan province; Zhaoqing, Guangdong province and in its first overseas plant located in Erfurt, Germany. Its four main R&D centers are based in Ningde, Fujian; Liyang, Jiangsu; Shanghai and Munich, Germany.

Sichuan Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL-SC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of CATL, received the PAS 2060 certification on carbon neutrality from the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company SGS in March, making the plant the world’s first zero-carbon factory in the new energy industry.

CATL-SC is located in Yibin, southwest China’s Sichuan Province. Three rivers, namely the Jinsha River, Minjiang River, and Yangtze River traverse the city’s northern part, providing a superior natural environment, unique geographical location, and abundant water resources, which enables the plant to reduce 400,000 tons of carbon emissions every year as over 80% of its energy consumption comes from hydropower.

The certification marks a significant milestone for CATL toward its carbon neutrality goals. As the world’s first zero-carbon battery plant, CATL’s Sichuan plant sets an example of how battery production can be carbon neutral and also offers a brand new solution featuring electrification and zero-carbon to the market.
