The Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital, located at the Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa, Israel, is the largest underground hospital in the world.

Named for and primarily funded by the late Sammy Ofer, this 2,000-bed facility is the largest of its kind in the world. During peacetime it serves as a 1,500-vehicle underground parking lot.

The Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital has 40-centimeter-thick reinforced concrete walls and ceilings, dozens of ventilation and air filtration units, equipped with carbon and HEPA filters to sieve out biological and chemical agents, and retractable soft-sided ducts, hidden away, can be pulled out to provide air-conditioning to the entire space.

It will take some 72 hours to transform the parking garage into a fully functioning hospital able to execute core medical functions, including dialysis units for close to 100 patients, a maternity ward, an oncology department, four operating rooms and a radiology unit.
