The Scandinavian Big Mountain Championship (SBMC) is an open freeride competition where amateurs and skilled beginners have the chance to compete against some of the best skiers and snowboarders in the world. Hosting a ski area for the event is the small resort of Riksgränsen, located above the Arctic Circle on the border between Sweden and Norway.

Freeriding is a style of snowboarding or skiing performed on natural, un-groomed terrain, without a set course, goals, or rules. It evolved throughout the sport’s formative early years as a contrary response to the highly regimented style of ski competition prevalent at the time. Snowboarders primarily refer to freeriding as backcountry, sidecountry, or off-piste snowboarding, and sometimes big mountain or extreme riding.

The SBMC is not only a race for glory and prize money. It is also the grande finale of the European freeride season with midnight sun skiing and partying in a relaxed atmosphere. The SBMC 2023 is a Freeride World Qualifier event.

All competitors under the age of 18 need a parent’s approval to join the competition. Riders under the age of 16 can`t join the competition. The SBMC follows the internationally established rules, regulations, and scoring system for freeride competitions. Transceiver, Recco-reflector, helmet, and back protector are mandatory for all riders during course check and competition.
