UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette – International Puppetry Association) was founded in Prague in 1929, at the Fifth Convention of Czech Puppeteers. Initially known under the name of Union Internationale des Marionnettistes, its goal remains to promote puppetry arts. It took on its present name in 1969.

In 1981, the French puppeteer Jacques Félix moved UNIMA’s headquarters to Charleville-Mézières, France, the location of the Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes since 1972. UNIMA is affiliated to UNESCO and it is a member of the International Theatre Institute.

As of 2022, there are approximately 100 national UNIMA centers. In addition to this figure, a number of countries have a UNIMA representative. UNIMA World Congresses have been held every 4 years. The latest is in Bali (Holds non-face-to-face online a year later because of COVID-19). The next UNIMA World Congresses will be held in 2025 in Chuncheon, South Korea.
