The road was built by the villagers of Guoliang in the 1970s, who were isolated from the outside world due to the steep cliffs surrounding their village. Using only hand tools, the villagers carved the road out of the mountainside, working for five years to complete the project.

The road opened to traffic in 1977 and has since become a popular tourist destination. Visitors can drive, hike, or bike through the tunnel. With cliffs on one side and a mountain face on the other. The road is narrow and winding, with hairpin turns that make for a thrilling drive.

Especially, Guoliang Village is located at the end of Guoliang Tunnel Road. It is a traditional Chinese village with a number of historical and cultural attractions.
